KOLKATA CITY TOUR

Wesleyan Methodist Church

The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Kolkata, now the CNI Wesleyan Church, was founded by British Methodist missionaries in the late 19th century to serve military and civilian congregations in colonial Calcutta. Initiated by Rev. James Broodbent with support from H. G. Highfield, the Sudder Street church was completed in 1886, while an earlier Wesleyan chapel at Taltola (1868) is remembered for being the first Christian church visited by Sri Ramakrishna. These churches became important centers of Protestant worship, education, and cross-cultural encounter during the colonial era, and the Sudder Street building continues to function as a place of worship and a reminder of Kolkata’s layered religious history.
