Bangriposi, a quaint tribal hamlet nestled at the foothills of the Thakurani hills in Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Witness rustic hospitality, an earthen home-away-from-home and delicious wood-fired local meals.

Simlipal National Park, 60 km from Bangriposi, is a 2,750 sq km sanctuary and a Project Tiger Reserve. Situated in the Mayurbhanj district, the park's hills, waterfalls and dense foliage hide almost 95 tigers and a number of other species. Around 230 species of birds like the Grey Hornbill, Indian Pied Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Indian Trogon, Red Jungle Fowl, Hill Mynah, Peafowl, Alexandrine Parakeet, and Crested Serpent Eagle are found here. The National Park is also home to a large number of reptiles including snakes and turtles. The spectacular Barehipani waterfall, with a 400-metre drop, and the Joranda waterfall, with a shorter drop of 150 metres, are so beautiful that one is forced to reflect on nature's majesty. Besides the fact that there's a lot of wildlife to be seen in Simlipal, there's also a wide range of local flora; the park boasts of at least 82 species of orchids many of which are on show at the small display at Gurguria. The other attractions of the Simlipal National Park are Mugger crocodiles at Jashipur apart from Barehipani and Joranda waterfalls.

This riverside is more fabled than the actual river. A blend of history and myth makes it interesting as well as famous. It was on the banks of the Buribalam river, where the encounter between Bengali freedom fighter Bagha Jatin and the then British commissioner, Charles Tegart, took place. A short hike of 7 kms from the bungalow, the road is replete with peasant huts, awning fields, canopied trees and the hills in the distance. On reaching the riverside, you can ride a boat upstream, simply sit on the rocks and take in the simplicity that only nature can paint or, better still, take a dip in the river!

Duarsini

Perched midway up the Thakurani hills is the Duarsini temple. Also known as the bonbibi or kanak durga mandir. Slowly gaining in religious significance this temple is a must visit to catch a splendid view of the Bangriposi panorama from atop the hills. For the more adventurous, trek uphill to the mysterious caves and rocks behind the temple or simply pack a picnic lunch to eat in the lap of nature.

Bisoi

A short drive from the bungalow (17 kms approximately), Bisoi is interesting for two reasons: one, the scenic drive through the hills to the other side and tow, the haat that is on Saturdays of every week. A haat is typically at the heart of Indian village life. It is the platform for local buying and selling. Where villagers trade their onions, potatoes, spices, turmeric, brinjals, cabbages, cauliflowers, beans, dried fish, snails weekly. If you are lucky, you could chance upon silver tribal jewellery. Sampling the local fermented rice-wine or haandiya is a must!

Kuliana Dokra Village

Not many know that the Dhokra art form had its origins in Jharkhand and Odisha before it became the mainstay of rural Bengal, namely Bankura. Dhokra is non-ferrous metal casting using the lost-wax casting technique. This sort of metal casting has been used in India for over 4,000 years and is still used. About 20 kms from the bungalow is the village of Kuliyana where rural artisans still struggle to keep the dying art form of Dhokra alive. Visit them if only to encourage the finesse of their art, get a taste of village life or simply buy some exquisite pieces. The surprise in store is the amazing hospitality with which you will be greeted!
